An Original Linocut Print of The Merfolk, from ancient folklore.
Handprinted by myself at my home studio in the Northeast of England, so everyone is slightly different and unique.

The legend of merfolk go back all the way to  Syria around 1000 BC when the Goddess Atargatis dove into a lake to take the form of a fish. As the gods there would not allow her to give up her great beauty, only her bottom half became a fish, and she kept her top half in human form. Merfolk stories are found all around the world and are still very popular today.
The mermaid/merman is purposely ungendered, due to the shape shifting nature of mermaids.

The print is 22cm x 36cm approximately, printed on A3 size paper.

The process of a linocut print is quite lengthy. I digitally design most of my prints, these are then printed and transferred to a block for carving. Once carved the block is inked and printed to produce the final piece. In a multiblock linocut such as this one, a number of blocks are carved, inked and printed in layers to achieve the final piece.  This print has threee different carved blocks. This current edition of The Merfolk is of only 3 prints, each one completely unique. Each print is titled, numbered  and signed for authenticity and comes with a descriptive note about the mythology of the design.

This linocut print is handprinted in beautiful thick somerset velvet paper, with Schminke water based ink.
