Sheela Na Gig Altar Goddess, an Original Miniature Linocut Print.
Hand printed by myself at my home studio in the Northeast of England.
Sheela na Gig is an ancient pagan symbol, the carvings of her are found throughout the United Kingdom and Europe and are often carved in to spiritual places. Not much is know as to why they were carved with many believing they warded off evil and that they are a remnant of pre-christian mother goddess worship. I believe she represents the birth of the entire world and the miracle of life and death.
These miniature prints are available in three colour ways and also mounted in black archival grade mount card.
The process of a linocut print is quite lengthy. I digitally design most of my prints, these are then printed and transferred to a block for carving. Once carved the block is inked and printed to produce the final piece.I handprint my sheela designs with a baron and a trusty old spoon so everyone is slightly different and unique.
The cream and white versions of sheela are printed on japanese awagami paper and the black and gold is printed on somerset black 300gsm paper.
They are printed with caligo oil based printing ink.
Your print will be carefully wrapped to ensure safe delivery and I am making the move to post consumer packaging to be more ecofriendly.
The Print is approximately 5cmx7cm and comes with a descriptive note about the design.
