An Original Linocut Print of The Selkie, from Scottish folklore
Handprinted by myself at my home studio in the Northeast of England, so everyone is slightly different and unique. The Selkie, or seal-folk are large seals found in the Northern Isles of Scotland that have the ability to shapeshift in to human form. Many folktales can be found about such creatures, many with motif of the skin of the female selkie being stolen by a man and her being coerced in to a relationship for many years, unable to change back and regain her freedom and true self but forever yearning for the ocean and once she found her skin she would leave and never look back.
The print is 22cm x 36cm approximately, printed on A3 paper.
The process of a linocut print is quite lengthy. I digitally design most of my prints, these are then printed and transferred to a block for carving. Once carved the block is inked and printed to produce the final piece. In a multiblock linocut such as this one, a number of blocks are carved, inked and printed in layers to achieve the final piece. This print has four different carved blocks. This current edition of The Selkie is of only 6 prints, each one completely unique. Each print is titled, numbered and signed for authenticity and comes with a descriptive note about the mythology of the design. This linocut print is handprinted in beautiful thick somerset velvet paper, with Caligo safewash ink. This print is available either mounted in a A3 archival grade white or black mount or unmounted. If you require a different mounting size please get in touch as I mount all my own work.
Your print will be carefully wrapped to ensure safe delivery. I am trying to make the move to using post-consumer packaging to be more ecofriendly.
