Aphrodite found Adonis as a baby and gave him to Persephone in the underworld to raise him. She returned once he was fully grown and fell instantly in love with him as he was the most beautiful man she had ever seen. Persephone had also fallen in love and longed to be with him but Adonis only had eyes for Aphrodite and from that day on they were never separated. She begged Zeus to turn from a mortal to a God and he granted her wish. Sadly one day Adonis was killed by a boar whilst out hunting and died in Aphrodites arms. His blood and her tears mingled together and out sprung anemone flowers. The festival of Adonia was held annually in his honour so the world could mourn his loss.
