Details
Two Original Linocut Prints of the mediaeval two-tailed mermaid art , from ancient folklore.
Handprinted by myself at my home studio in the Northeast of England, so everyone is slightly different and unique.
The legend of merfolk go back all the way to Syria around 1000 BC when the Goddess Atargatis dove into a lake to take the form of a fish. As the gods there would not allow her to give up her great beauty, only her bottom half became a fish, and she kept her top half in human form. Merfolk stories are found all around the world and are still very popular today. The two tailed mermaid depiction was popular in mediaeval paintings. sea nymphs, mythical nereid, oceanid, magical sirens all belong to the mermaid folklore.
